The first 100 days in a new role can be both exhilarating and stressful all at once. As a fractional CMO for hire, I step in to new CMO roles more frequently than most. Let me tell you, no matter how many times I begin a new engagement the pressure remains high! Over the years however, I've learned that there are 5 key steps that can ensure my client (and I) will have successful results and a positive impact on the business. I practice this methodology; I ask my fractional teammates to follow it; and in this blog series I'll share the practice with you.
Step 3 of the 5 Steps That Make or Break Interim CMO Engagements: Diagnose, Then Make a Plan
3. Diagnose, then make a plan. After digging in deep and asking the hard questions, I prepare a needs assessment. It's a scorecard that illustrates my client's current challenges ranked by priority. Then I propose a plan that offers solutions to each. The solutions I propose will take into account many variables including business stage, budget, available skillsets, and appetite for change. It will involve both short-term solutions that can be accomplished in fewer than 90 days and a longer term go-to-market plan. My goal is to help an organization focus and maximize its passion and energy.
Not only do I share the scorecard and diagnosis with as many of my colleagues as possible, I also make sure that those colleagues are in agreement that the assessment is accurate and imperative. When I can secure their buy-in, I know that I'm on the way to a successful marketing agreement.
